Growing up mostly in the UAE, I was rarely able to attend such events, as they usually took place in India. The few I did attend left a lasting impression on me as it was a night the entire family came together to celebrate the new beginnings of someone's life, while also making memories with the person before they start this new chapter in their life. To me, these gatherings signified unity, love and sisterhood.
As this event is primarily rooted in Indian culture, I wanted to create a narrative space where people from different cultures and backgrounds could experience the same joy and sense of belonging that I did. I want to incorporate fantasy elements by portraying the characters as fairies in order to offer an imaginative interpretation of Indian culture. I see strong parallels between the whimsical, symbolic nature of fairies and the richness of Indian cultural storytelling.
At the same time, using fairies allows the narrative to exist beyond specific cultural and social boundaries, making the experience more accessible and universal, as fairies exist outside of real-world nationality or identity. Through this approach, I want viewers to feel immersed in this magical world, as though they themselves are one of the fairies.
This project is an interactive installation that functions as a controller for navigating the virtual space. The interface is designed using symbolic elements from the space, the flower, the candle, the henna cones, and the drum. Each object controls a direction: the flower moves down, the candle moves up, the henna cones move right, and the drum moves left, allowing users to fully immerse themselves while interacting with the installation.
